Academic

Your child will be taught by specialists from the very beginning, following a broad curriculum and being introduced to the subjects and skills which will set her up to be a lifelong learner.

We believe young children learn through play and by engaging in well-planned, structured activities inside and outside. With small classes, we pride ourselves on getting the best out of each child and helping them discover and develop the areas which spark their interest. The experience at Headington Prep is, of course, about far more than just what goes on in the classroom. We encourage a healthy attitude to learning and offer plenty of opportunities for enrichment, extra-curricular activities and letting off steam.

Early Years Foundation Stage

In Nursery and Reception, your child will focus on the seven areas of learning outlined here benefiting from subject specialists in Computing, French, Music and Physical Education.

Key Stage 1

As your child goes into Year 1, they will be introduced to a more formal approach to learning complemented by engaging cross-curricular activities and plenty of opportunities for practical activities and hands-on learning.

What will they learn?

There’s a strong focus on reading and writing throughout Years 1 and 2, following on from the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics scheme introduced in the Early Years. Confidence in Maths is developed through the ‘Inspire’ programme which builds core mathematical skills.

Your child will work with subject specialists in French, Music, Physical Education (including swimming) and Computing. They will take part in fortnightly Forest School sessions and regular sessions in the Library.

Key Stage 2

As pupils progress to Year 3 and beyond, the curriculum becomes broader to prepare them for the next stage in their education. Our aim is for every child to really come to understand the skillset required for different disciplines.

What will they learn?

As pupils enter Key Stage 2, form teachers will continue to lead learning in English, History, Geography, Maths, Science and PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education). By Year 5 and 6, most subjects are taught by specialist teachers, enhanced by strong cross-curricular links. At this point, your child will have specialist teaching in PE, Music, Art and Design Technology, Drama, Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Dance, Computing, English and Maths.
