Young Scientists of the Year 2022

Three of Headington’s finest scientific minds were celebrated in this year’s Young Scientists of the Year (YSOTY) 2022 ceremony.

The event is an opportunity for Oxfordshire’s and Buckinghamshire’s secondary schools to nominate their best Year 13 students in Physics, Chemistry and Biology and to acknowledge their outstanding efforts in Science during the past year.

The criteria used to select students is left up to each school; it could be based on exam results, progress made during the student’s course or recognition of their enthusiasm and commitment towards the subject.

YSOTY 2022 was a fantastic feel-good event and a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge our young, local, scientific talent. Headington’s three winners were Ninnin (Biology), Jenny (Chemistry) and Zeynep (Physics).

The award ceremony took place at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History on Wednesday 16th November and included a keynote presentation from Dr Parinaz Mehdipour (Principal Investigator at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research with Nuffield).

In addition, there were talks from two inspirational young researchers and apprentices: Rupo Mapanga (placement student at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source at STFC) and Luca Di Giovanni (Degree apprenticeship student at Bentley and previous winner of a YSOTY award).

This event is supported by the Oxford Trust, Science Oxford, Nuffield Department of Medicine and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.
