Headington’s U18 Hockey team dazzle

Headington’s U18 Hockey team are celebrating after victory in the annual U18 Oxford County Hockey Tournament on Wednesday 9th October.

The girls got off to a great start winning 3-0 against Oxford High School. The next draw was against local rivals Magdalen College School, who the girls drew against, meaning Headington had to win their final pool game to get through to the next stage against Bloxham. They proved to be difficult opponents but after an impressive shot from Jemima and rebound follow-up from Bizza, the girls walked off the pitch with a 1-0 win.

Cokethorpe were the semi-final opponents. With minutes to go, another fabulously-executed team manoeuvre led to a goal from Holly and a final score of 2-1.

The final was a chance to replay Magdalen College School, the tournament’s reigning champions. Both teams showed fantastic periods of play. Headington were 1-0 up at half time but Magdalen managed to convert in the second half after a series of short corners. The final score was 1-1 meaning the game would be decided by penalty flicks.

Holly, Jemima & Katie L scored before Caitlin made some amazing saves and Katie managed to score the winning flick, making Headington U18 Country Champions 2019!

Lexi, Hockey Captain said: “Special mention goes to Katie and Freya who only found out they were playing that morning!

“It was a fabulous day out and an impressive performance from every player. Everyone worked tirelessly throughout the day and didn’t give up until the final whistle. Our drive and determination was admirable and was definitely a day to remember.

“Special thanks to Mr Williams and Miss Dobson for their inspirational coaching and chat from the side lines. It definitely didn’t go unnoticed. We look forward to going again next year!”
