Year 9 Tackle Streets with Litterpick
On Friday 20th June, Year 9 pupils stepped out into the local community to take part in a community litter pick.
The surrounding area was divided into seven zones, with each form group assigned a section to clean.
Armed with litter pickers, landfill and recycling sacks, the girls enthusiastically took on the challenge.
Despite the hot and humid June weather, the pupils were undeterred. Sunscreen was liberally applied and spirits remained high as they collected a wide array of litter.
Some groups came across more unusual items, including abandoned children’s car seats and fast food packaging, but all gave their best effort to make a visible difference to the streets.
Local residents were appreciative of the initiative. One elderly lady commented, “It’s delightful to see these children doing such good for our local community. On behalf of my street, thank you.”
Mr David Cunningham, Charities and Communities Co-ordinator, praised all the forms for their hard work, and said: “All the forms were excellent, but a special mention goes to U4DT, U4EGM and U4DC, who collected the most.”
Year 9 pupil Rawpalene said: “It’s so important to do things like this for our local environment. It’s all about doing good for our surroundings.”
Overall, it was a very successful and rewarding initiative – a true example of community spirit in action.
