World Book Day 2024

This year’s World Book Day was celebrated with two visiting authors for different sections of the Senior School.

‘Lighting the Fuse’ author, Lucy Lewis, came to talk to members of Headington’s Combined Cadet Force about the autobiography of her life in the British Army. She talked about her training at Sandhurst and then moving on to becoming Britain’s first female bomb disposal expert, and her subsequent tours of duty in Germany and Northern Ireland.

Librarian Mrs Sandra Withey said: “Lucy’s book is written in a very engaging style and her talk was fascinating; the pupils shared her humour and very much enjoyed hearing her anecdotes and asking her lots of questions.”

Non-fiction author, Chris Lloyd, presented his talk on Shakespeare to U3, L4 and U4 in a highly-entertaining way, discussing common themes and inspiration through the use of different emotions represented by the items hidden in the coloured pockets of his coat! There was plenty of audience participation, acting and fun in each session.

Character competitions, new book suggestions and various displays were also organised to celebrate World Book Day for all pupils and the celebrations were rounded off with a whole school ‘Drop Everything and Read’ session on the Friday.
