U16 National Hockey Finals

Read a full blow-by-blow account from Headington’s Hockey specialist Mr Alex Williams.

On Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th February, Headington’s Under 16 A Hockey team travelled to the Lee Valley Hockey Stadium in London to compete in the National Hockey Finals.

Headington took over 150 staff and students to cheer on the squad over the two days, making it an inspiring experience for all. The team played brilliantly, showing their skills off in an amazing, international-class setting.

The group lost to a strong Sedbergh side in the semi-final and had an agonising defeat after a series of tense penalty flicks to Surbiton High School in Thursday’s match, after having led 1-0 for most of the 70 minutes. The girls performed admirably, going toe to toe with the best ‘hockey schools’ in the country. Headington competed with homegrown talent – a huge testament to the girls and to sport at Headington.

Mr Williams said: “It was an incredible experience.

“A huge thank you to Mrs Huggins and the PE team for their help and for everyone who came to support, and has shown support, to myself and the girls throughout what has been an incredible season. A massive thanks in particular to Maddy Dobson and Pip Horlock for their time and effort throughout the year.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls – we are the fourth best team in the country – Headington’s best ever Hockey team.”

Congratulations to all those who took part and thank you to our Team Headington supporters.
