The U13 Lady Taverners Cricket Tournament

Headington entered two U3 teams into the U13 Lady Taverners Cricket competition on Thursday 13th February, this time held on home turf.

The day opened with Headington A v Headington B – the A team batted first and posted a very good score of 98 runs. Five batters retired (scoring over 15 runs each): Megan, Daisy, Martha, Emma and Jess – and started to hone their indoor batting skills. The B team replied with 40 runs – Sophia and Tilly batted outstandingly and each reached 15 to retire. Sophie took three excellent catches which put pressure on the B team who lost all eight wickets before they could reach the A team’s score.

The B team then faced Bartholomew School. Zara took a wicket with her first ball and Bartholomew scored a total of 75 runs. The Bs got off to a steady start but wickets steadily fell, leaving Tilly and Neretva at the crease. Ten runs were needed off the last 11 balls. Neretva was bowled out close to the finish but Tilly stayed calm and focussed, finally making the needed runs with two balls to spare. This took the Bs in to their final game v Didcot Girls School. Didcot batted first and posted an impressive 108 runs. Ella took two wickets and Zainab one. The B team made a spirited reply against some accurate bowling and made 66 runs, finishing third in the tournament.

Headington A faced Cokethorpe in their second match. Megan and Ruby opened the batting, followed by Daisy and Evie who all achieved the maximum score, tallying an impressive total score of 103. In reply Cokethorpe made 61 runs with Daisy taking an amazing catch at cover. Into the final match against Tudor Hall, Daisy was the pick of the batters, making it to 15 and retiring once more. Wickets tumbled but sensible batting from Emma, Evie and Daisy in the last two overs brought them home with 113 on the scoreboard. The As put the pressure on Tudor Hall with an amazing display of bowling and sharp fielding. All eight wickets were taken (four caught, three run out, one bowled) in quick succession. Evie took an incredible four wickets in her 1.3 overs! Martha, the wicket keeper throughout, did a fantastic job with a total of four catches and involvement in multiple run outs throughout the day.

The A Team will now move on to the next round of the competition as joint winners, totting up an impressive three wins from three games.

Players of the Day were Evie from the A team and Tilly from the B team.
