The Art of Books

Girls and staff were treated to a talk on ‘The Art of Books’ by Blackwell’s, Oxford on Thursday 23rd January.

The audience was shown images of various book covers and together the group discussed what worked well, how they had been made and why certain styles had been adopted. Initially covering some classics, the talk went on to focus on some Oxford classics – ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe’, ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Northern Lights’. The group saw different covers for each of these and were able to compare artists’ styles and techniques.

The talk provided inspiration for the Art Society’s current book covers competition and also showed us how to judge our books by our covers!
