Staff run Oxford Half

Headington staff braved torrential downpours to take part in this year’s Oxford Half Marathon.

At least five members of staff took part, from marathon veteran and Head of Economics Mr George Vlachonikolis to school chaplain and Biology teacher the Rev Tom Howell.

It was a first and a personal best for Head of Geography, Charities and Communities Mr David Cunningham, who completed the course in 1:46:55 in his first official half marathon.

Mr Cunningham said: “The rain added to the atmosphere but the crowds still came out to cheer. The people of Oxford were out offering such amazing encouragement throughout.

“A particular highlight was running past St Michael’s Church in Summertown, the rain was horizontal but the Reverend and congregation were all out cheering on the runners.”

Chemistry teacher Ms Katie Holder and Head of U3 Mrs Hannah Badger also completed the 13.1 mile course.

Harriet, L6, was also spotted running the course with a group from her rowing club and a number of alumni.

There were a few familiar faces around the course too, with Assistant Head Mrs Rachel Bowen and L5, Hannah among the team of marshalls helping ensure the race ran smoothly.

Each year the event raises thousands for charity, with Cancer Research UK the main charity partner along with Alzheimer’s Society, Children with Cancer and local causes Oxfordshire Mind, Sobell House hospice and SSNAP, Support for the Sick Newborn and their Parents based at Oxford’s John Radcliffe Hospital.
