Royal Society of Chemistry Competition

A select group of marvellous middle school chemists from U4, L5 and U5 attended the Royal Society of Chemistry “Top of the Bench” competition at University of Oxford on Wednesday 23rd November.

The event included practical chemistry experiments set by the research scientists at the university such as finding compounds using chromatography and a UV light, finding the percentage concentration of an unknown solution using UB spectroscopy and determining rf values for referencing compounds and identifying an unknown X.

The event was rounded off with a talk from Tom Welton OBE, Professor of Sustainable Chemistry at Imperial College London, on ‘The Power of Research’.

Mrs Rebecca Hawkes, Head of Middle School, said: “The girls absolutely loved the event, using Oxford Universities facilities and hearing from such inspirational speakers!”
