Rhetoric Cup Final
On Friday 27 June, the Hive Lecture Theatre was alive with energy as the English Department celebrated one of the high points of the school year with the Rhetoric Cup final.
The Year 10 Rhetoric Cup final showcased 10 speeches on a diverse range of areas featuring topics including ‘Crows’ and ‘How language shapes the way we think’.
Guest judge Luisa Baldini – a Headington Rye parent and presentation and communication expert – opened the event by leading the audience through a range of confidence-boosting tactics before the speeches got underway.
While the speakers’ presentation styles were each as individual as their topics they had chosen, all spoke with confidence and poise.
The final decision was tough, but it was Phoebe’s spectacular speech on Flags which stole the show.
Elizabeth was commended in the runner-up position with her speech entitled, ‘Can we really learn from history?’
Head of English Dr Mairead McKendry said: “We are very proud of all our Year 10 students who participated in this competition, which is a great Headington Rye tradition.”
