Poetry of Science Winner 2022

A Headington poet has won a competition celebrating the Poetry of Science.

After being shortlisted for her age group, Millie (L4) presented her poem ‘Dark Space’ at IF Oxford’s Poetry of Science competition on Saturday 8th October.

The Director of Oxford Brookes University’s Poetry Centre, Dr Niall Munro, opened the event with a fascinating speech which focussed on the links between science and poetry using Emily Dickinson’s poetry as examples.

Soon after, the competition entrants took to the stage and recited their works. Following some excellent examples of poetry, Millie was selected by the judges as the winner of her age category.

Her mother Zoe said: “The poetry event was a wonderful experience. Millie delivered her poem beautifully and I am very proud of her.

“Thank you to Dr McKendry for entering Millie into this competition and allowing her to have such an incredible experience.”

Dr Mairead McKendry, Head of English at Headington, said: “Well done to Millie for her well-deserved selection as the winner of her age category! It is fantastic to be able to celebrate her poetry.”
