Headington Fencers at the England Youth Championships

Three fencers flew the flag for Headington at the England Youth Championships at the Hatfield Sports Village on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th June. The three girls fenced across four events over the weekend.

Charlotte competed in the Girls’ U11 Foil, Alexandra took part in the Girls’ U15 Epee while Darcy fenced in both the Girls’ U15 Sabre and the Girls’ U15 Foil. For both Alexandra and Darcy this was a step up in age group – which also meant a step up in weapon size!

Charlotte started off well with four out of six wins in the opening round. She was ranked ninth overall before being beaten by the eighth seed who knocked Charlotte back into 17th place final standing, an excellent first performance in a national competition.

In the Epee, Alex had a challenging draw of more experienced fencers. She impressed, knocking out a fencer ranked 24 places higher than her in the direct eliminations before being knocked out by a top seed in the last 32.

In Darcy’s first event, the ‘blue riband’ Foil, she fenced convincingly, beating GB Cadets and international fencers on her way to taking fifth place overall. She also reached the top 16 in the Sabre event.
