GSA U13 Netball Weekend

On Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th September, Headington School’s U13A Netball team travelled to Condover Hall in Shropshire for a weekend of sport.

They were competing in the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) Netball weekend where an enormous 26 schools were taking part in the Year 8 competition.

The weekend was action packed from the start with the athletes arriving on Friday evening to a range of outdoor education activities including zip wire, abseiling and rock climbing. The girls then got an early night in preparation for a busy tournament schedule on Saturday. With an early start at 6.30 am, the squad were up to for breakfast and preparing for a busy day of matches.

After winning six games, drawing one and losing one, the students qualified top of their pool to be placed in the Trophy competition.

The Sunday brought a tough set of matches against the top schools in the GSA. The girls started the day with wins against St Paul’s, Notting Hill, Ealing High and Lady Eleanor Holles, sadly losing one match to Tormead. However, the results and points in the groups were so close that Headington’s placing for the final match all hung on a match between Notting Hill, Ealing High and Tormead, in which the girls needed a draw to make the final. Amazingly, it went to a 9-9 draw placing Headington top of the group and into the final against Putney High School!

Putney were a tough opponent, playing some very effective Netball and Headington’s squad put in an impressive effort, but sadly lost 9-2 in the final.

Miss Sarah Huggins, Director of Sport at Headington School said: “The U13 team should be immensely proud of finishing second out of 26 schools. All received a silver medal for their efforts.

“Special mention goes to Lara who was voted player of the tournament by all of the umpires involved.”

Well done to the entire team:

Freya (Captain), Ruthie (Vice Captain), Chrissy, Izzy, Likita, Lola, Natasha, Emily, Lara & Gabriella
