Girls On The Ball Football Tournament

Girls on The Ball (GOTB) Football Tournament at Oxford High School

On Thursday 27th February, our Year 5 & 6 Football team travelled to Oxford High School to take on some of the best school teams in Oxfordshire. We were drawn in a group with St Nicholas Primary, St Philip and James Primary, Windmill school and Oxford High School.

Our opening two games v St Nicholas and St Philip and James were battling 0-0 draws. The Headington defence held out well with both goalkeepers Irina and Tiah making brilliant saves. Rose, Blanca, Martha, Lottie and Olive demonstrated excellent blocking and defensive skills to help us earn two clean sheets.

In our third game v Windmill, we fell a goal behind early on but battled back with goals from Mariyah and Sofia to secure a 2-1 victory. This put us top of the group going into our final game v Oxford High. This was a close game that was decided by two late goals which secured a 2-0 win for the hosts.

Despite the defeat, we qualified for the semi-finals where we would play Oxford High again. Headington had the best chances of the game but couldn’t find the breakthrough and eventually the game went to penalties. After Mariyah had put Headington 1-0 up, we missed our next two spot kicks which allowed Oxford High to send the game to sudden death. Headington keeper Rose made three fantastic saves to keep Headington in the tie but after seven sudden death penalties, Oxford High scored the eighth to reach the final.

The Headington team can be incredibly proud of reaching the semi final against tough opposition. All teams showed fair play and sportsmanship throughout the event.
