Exploring Latin

On Tuesday 7th February Headington’s Classics Department hosted the annual Sixth Form Latin Set Text Conference in The Hive. This was attended by 115 students from a wide variety of schools from across Oxfordshire and beyond.

Students were able to hear talks on the set texts which they are studying for their A Levels: Professor Matthew Leigh (St Anne’s Oxford) spoke eloquently about Turnus and Aeneas, Dr Andrew Sillet (St Hilda’s) on Cicero’s defence speech Pro Cluentio making many contemporary comparisons, Dr Pan Christoforos (Oriel and Jesus Oxford) spoke on Tacitus’ portrayal of Tiberius and Sejanus while Professor Llewellyn Morgan (Brasenose Oxford) focussed on Ovid’s Heroides.

Mrs Louise Workman, Head of Classics at Headington, said: “This was a great opportunity for students to enjoy university-style lectures from experts as they prepare for their final exams. Thank you to all of those who attended but also my thanks must go to the speakers for their insightful talks!”
