Evie’s London Mini Marathon

A Headington schoolgirl raced her way to 21st place by pounding the streets of London alongside this year’s London marathon runners.

On 3rd October 2021, Evey (L5) was among 200 young runners taking part in the Virgin London Mini Marathon 2021, which also doubled up as British Athletics Road Championships and the London Boroughs championshipss.

Evey ran for Team South East (one of twelve regions who entered) in the U15 girls’ team. She was one of just six athletes selected to represent Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. London also had separate teams of six athletes per borough competing.

Evey ran in the second to last race starting and, after an early breakfast, the competitors headed to the starting area near the Temple tube station. Evey said “The start was very hectic with a relatively short start line and over 200 runners from which at least 70 of them were keen to be at the front but the weather was perfect. So much better than the day before! It was an amazing experience taking part in such a large race in the centre of London.”

She managed to run an amazing 9:02 min on the 2.6km course, making her the top runner of her region. She finished 21st in total with her team coming in seventh overall. At the finish all the competitors received a finisher medal and a T shirt to keep as memento.
