Empathy Action Slum Simulation

This week, U4 girls stepped outside their comfort zones to participate in the annual ‘Poverty Trap’ simulation, organised by the Geography Department in collaboration with Empathy Action.

This year marks the ten’year anniversary of the Geography Department’s collaboration with Empathy Action for the simulation!

The girls immersed themselves in the complex web of challenges that individuals across the world navigate daily.

Assuming the roles of those less fortunate helped the participants develop a deeper understanding of the multifaceted issues surrounding poverty. This experiential approach stimulated reflection, encouraging participants to question assumptions and preconceptions.

Mr David Cunningham, Head of Geography, said: “I was so impressed by all of the girls today. The volunteers from Empathy Action commented on how outstanding they all were during the immersive simulation.

“One lady summed it up perfectly, saying her one word for the year group was “energy”. She went on to highlight how, in your groups, you demonstrated full commitment and enthusiasm throughout.

“Having been involved in this event for a long time, I must say I was deeply impressed, especially by this group’s insightful and empathetic comments during the feedback session. It was clear that they truly grasped the difficulties and challenges faced by those living in extreme poverty.

“At a time when social media often amplifies unsubstantial opinions, empathy has never been more important. Showing understanding and compassion towards others is vital, not just in Geography but in all aspects of life.

“Thank you to the girls again for being such an inspiring group this afternoon – Empathy Action legends!”
