Dr Rachel Clarke Visit
Ahead of her visit to this year’s Hay Festival, shortlisted author and Headington Rye Oxford parent Dr Rachel Clarke took time out of her busy schedule to come and talk to members of the school community.
The audience of pupils, staff and parents listened to Rachel talk about her latest book ‘The Story of a Heart’ which is shortlisted for the prestigious Women’s Prize for Non-fiction.
It tells the story, extremely sensitively, of the two families linked by the transplant of a heart, as well as all the NHS staff and people involved in the whole process.
This moving account also delves into the history of medicine and how progress over the years in medical developments has enabled this life-saving surgery to take place.
Rachel’s previous careers include journalism and writing for television and she was keen to point out to students that their decisions early on about what they want to study do not mean there is no room for change later. As she said of herself ‘I feel I have at least three more careers left in me!’
After answering some thoughtful questions from pupils, Rachel kindly signed copies of her books. All of her books are available to borrow from the school Library.
The award winner will be announced on Thursday 12th June
