Discovering Ancient Egyptians at Highclere Castle

On Friday 24th May Year 4 visited Highclere Castle, to support their topic on Ancient Egypt. The current home of the 8th Earl and countess of Carnarvon, in 1922 the 5th Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun. Over 5,000 objects, works of art and everyday items were found in the tomb and some of these were brought back to be displayed in the castle, providing an extraordinary insight into the Ancient Egyptian civilisation. Year 4 had a fantastic time and learned a lot about Ancient Egypt. They walked around the exterior of the house and through the beautiful secret garden. In the “Hands On” room, the girls dressed up in replica Egyptian costume and jewellery, handled replica artefacts and made a cartouche with their name in hieroglyphs. It was a day to remember and it brought to life what they are learning in the classroom.
