Chemistry Competition

Scientists in Year 10 have taken part in the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools’ Analyst Competition.

As part of the competition, pupils investigated soil from an old industrial site to see if it contained any contaminants.

They used titration, chromatography and tests for ions. All of these were new practical techniques for the pupils and included several complex calculations.

However, the group persevered through the challenges and discovered some of the joys and frustrations of carrying out real experiments to try to solve a complex problem.

The Chemistry staff were impressed by their positive attitude and willingness to have a go, even when they were uncertain of the outcome. The results will now be submitted and revealed at a later date.

Victoria and Anthea (Year 10) said: “Today was an absolutely eye-opening experience that allowed us to implement our chemistry knowledge in a practical context; what we liked the most was the process of working together as a team.

“We tried out a lot of different experiments that took us beyond the curriculum. Despite the challenges and unfamiliar procedures, we were lucky to have our team members and our teachers along the way and we really hope to take part in more similar events in the future!”
