CAU Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships

Headington runners impressed at a prestigious inter county cross country meet.

Saturday 12th March was the Counties Athletic Union inter-counties Cross Country Championships. Evey (L5) and Izzy (L5) were running in the U15 Oxfordshire Team while Megan (L4) in the U13 Oxfordshire Team.

For Megan, this was her first major event. The start line was very wide but the runners were funnelled in to a narrow path fairly early into the race. This caused a dash to the funnel to gain a good position early on. Megan got stuck but recovered so well that the remainder of the race was all about passing runners. She finished the 3,000m course in 103rd place and was the second Oxfordshire runner getting points for the team.

In the U15 race over 4,000m, Evey capitalised on a strong start to cross the line first, pipping the English National Champion and other English, Scottish and Welsh athletes to the post to take gold.

Congratulations also go to Izzy for a strong run finishing in good time.

Evey’s mother said: “We were incredibly proud of Megan for her first competitive race and already being on a high, what came after completely blew all our minds. It’s just unbelievable. Evey is a superstar now! Everyone has been checking out her Power of 10 (the British Athletics profile website) and wonder who this girl is!”

With each county sending teams of eight athletes, there were around 300 runners on the start line at each event.

Mr Danny Travis, Teacher of Physical Education at Headington School said: “Unbelievable run from Evey, but an incredible effort from all the girls involved. A stunning effort.”
