British biodiversity: a celebration of plants

The postcards displayed here are the result of an interdisciplinary project between the Biology and Art Departments at Headington which took place over the course of the Summer Term 2023.

To celebrate the diversity of native herbaceous plants and trees and to encourage closer observation of the species growing in the immediate environment, all pupils in the Prep and Senior Schools were challenged to make one drawing from a live specimen and to record its English and Latin name.

The resulting drawings include around 200 native species represented at different phases of their life cycles as the term progressed. The different styles and media used reflect the individual creative responses of each artist.

With thanks to all members of the Biology and Art departments for the collection and distribution of specimens, for taking time to run the activity in lessons and for the display of the drawings.
