Game Changing Women

The last full day of the Summer Term saw the final of the ‘Game-Changing Women’ competition for the Year 7s.

This is a project which is run across different departments: English, History, Drama and the library.

Each pupil is allocated a woman who has made a difference in society, whether this be an Ancient Greek athlete or a modern politician.

They research the life of their woman using library resources and help from the History Department, craft their speeches in English lessons and learn how to deliver them with poise and confidence in Drama.

They also produce a creative piece of work inspired by their game-changing woman.

English teacher Dr Kate Rees said: “Huge congratulations go to Bella, Clara, Rosie and Flic who were chosen as their class winners for the speech competition and who had the courage to stand up in the Hive Lecture Theatre and deliver their speeches in front of their year group and a panel of judges.

“The speeches – on Helen Keller, Aphra Behn, the Olympian Cynisca and the environmentalist Wangari Maathai – were incredibly polished and given with great confidence and clarity.

“Well done to Flic in particular, who won the overall competition for her very sensitively written speech on Maathai.”
