Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra
On Wednesday 28th June, the School welcomed New Jersey’s Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra.
The orchestra visited Headington Rye as the first stop on their UK tour and performed a joint concert with our very own String Orchestra.
Stretto Youth Chamber Orchestra, SYCO, is an inspiring group of young people from diverse backgrounds, directed by Sherri Anderson.
They are an innovative orchestra with no hierarchy in their seating arrangement, encouraging personal responsibility throughout the orchestra and valuing immersion as part of their learning.
The concert began with the String Orchestra joining SYCO for a well-paced and energetic performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no.3.
SYCO continued with a range of pieces, from jazz and folk-inspired arrangements to a solo piano number.
The Headington Rye Oxford String Orchestra rejoined Stretto to finish with a reprise of Soon Hee Newbould’s wonderfully lyrical ‘Alis Volat Propriis’, translated as ‘She Flies With Her Own Wings’.
Director of Performing Arts Mrs Aimee Jamison said: “We were so pleased to take part in this musical and cultural exchange, enjoyed equally by both sides!”
