Model United Nation at Marlborough College

On Friday 20th June 2025, members of the Politics, Economics and Business team took seven Headington Rye Oxford pupils to Marlborough College to take part in a Model United Nation conference.

The pupils, from Year 9 to Year 12, represented the delegation of Syria on a range of committees ranging from Crisis to Modern Slavery and Women’s Rights.

Topics covered policies to reduce people trafficking, universal healthcare and women’s political and legal rights.

For some of the pupils, it was their first conference and for others it was their sixth conference.

The girls were also interested to hear the reflections of Sir Malcolm Rifkind, Foreign Secretary in 1997, who provided a thought-provoking insight into political change.

Head of Economics and Business Studies Mr Cy Webber said: “It was very rewarding to learn that all of our pupils made speeches, asked searching questions of other delegates who made proposals and submitted their own clauses to make sure that resolutions worked in favour from a Syrian government perspective.

“They clearly demonstrated confidence in negotiating from a position outside of their own displaying the ability to see the world through a different lens. They are a credit to themselves and to Headington Rye.”
