Fencers triumph in return to arena

Headington fencers have returned to the competitive arena for the first time since before the pandemic.

Charlotte, U4, and Cherrie, L5, flew the flag for Headington have both secured a spot in the finals of the British Youth Championships after an impressive performance at the Southern Region Qualifiers on Sunday 13th March.

Charlotte represented Headington in the U14 Sabre qualifier and won a gold medal, fencing against a more experienced athlete, before fencing in the U14 Epée qualifier and picking up a silver medal. She will now compete in both events at the finals at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield in May.

Cherrie won her gold medal match in the U16 Sabre qualifier with a resounding 15-2 victory, securing her place at Sheffield.

Their efforts should prove inspiring for some of the novice fencers on the team, many of whom will be competing for the first time at the Public Schools Fencing Championship on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th March. Good luck to all our fencers!
