Academic Excellence

At Headington Sixth Form, you will follow the demanding A Level programme, studying up to four subjects in depth.

A Levels are complemented by our Electives and Academic Skills programme or our Mini MBA course, along with our new Community Service programme. There is also the opportunity to complete an Extended Project Qualification in a subject which interests you – an excellent preparation for the rigours of university. All sixth formers continue to do weekly PE or Sport sessions as part of our commitment to ensure all girls have the opportunity to continue with a sport they love.

Entry Requirements

Candidates are expected to achieve Grade 7 or above in subjects they wish to take at A Level, or, for subjects not previously studied, a 7 in facilitating subjects. A list of these can be found here.

All candidates will take two written general papers, one Maths related and one essay writing based, a computer based thinking skills assessment and have an academic interview, with subject specific staff.

More information about the application process can be found on our Admissions pages.

A Levels

The A Level programme is a demanding and intellectually stimulating academic challenge. At Headington, you may choose up to four subjects to study, with the majority of girls choosing three.

Choice
We offer a very wide range of subjects to choose from and provide expert support in selecting the right options to support your chosen career path. We build our timetables around your choices, meaning there are no restrictions on which subjects you can take together.

Electives

A fabulous opportunity to choose from a wide range of hands-on, exciting and thought-provoking short programmes.

When the A Level and AS Level system was given an overhaul, we saw an opportunity to widen the breadth of study we have always prided ourselves on at Headington.

What will your new challenge be?
Our Electives Programme, introduced in 2016, provides the opportunity to take three short courses in a subject which interests you. It could be something that supplements your exam subjects or leads towards a university course, it could be something you chose to drop at Sixth Form or it could be something completely different. Some activities are more teacher-led, others encourage girls to have much more control over their learning. Whether you’re learning how to feed yourself on a limited budget, getting to grips with the basics of Italian or coming up with your own inventions in STEM, the Electives programme provides plenty of opportunities to get you thinking in new and exciting ways. The subjects on offer change on a yearly basis.

Digital Learning

Headington is a forward-thinking school, embracing modern technologies that can aid and enhance the learning experience for the girls in school.

In the Sixth Form L6-U6 (years 12-13), we expect all students to have a digital device with them in every lesson, which can be connected to the school Wi-Fi. This device can be a laptop, Chromebook, tablet or Macbook. The most suitable device for an individual student depends on the combination of subjects she has chosen to study. However, all devices should:

  • have a keyboard (with the exception of tablets, if preferred)
  • have internet and wifi access, including the ability to access the Google suite of apps
  • have a minimum battery life of four hours
  • ideally be robust and lightweight
  • be insured
