Music from Stage and Screen Concert

On Thursday 16th May musicians from the Prep and Senior school came together for a night of music from movies and musicals.

This is always a well-attended event and a chance for our younger students and remaining L5 and L6 to enjoy some of their favourite pieces. The Flute Ensemble kicked off with the toe-tapping ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ from ‘Toy Story’, followed by the entertainingly-named ‘Gastric Band’ from U4, who performed an original arrangement of Abba’s ‘Mama Mia’, followed by Stevie Wonder’s ‘Isn’t She Lovely’. Annika Kotilaine performed a haunting version ‘Still Hurting from The Last Five Years’, supported by string accompaniment arranged by Miss Semple. The joint Sinfonietta, featuring Prep, U3 and L4 musicians then performed two classic pieces as a mass-orchestra: ‘My Favourite Things’ from ‘The Sound of Music’, and ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ from ‘Mary Poppins’. The sound produced from so many players was impressive!

The audience treated to another band, ‘Venus’, comprised of L5 musicians, who performed two lovely pieces: ‘Love for Sale’ from 1930s film ‘The New Yorkers’ and ‘Put Your Records On’ from the aptly-titled film, ‘Venus’. Imogen performed a beautifully poised rendition of ‘If’ from ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’, followed by Stringendo with two contrasting numbers: the ‘Schindler’s List’ and ‘James Bond’ themes. To close, the Symphony Orchestra performed Miss Semple’s entertaining arrangement of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, with audience participation on the ‘Gallileo’ sections!

Director of Music Mrs Aimee Jamison said: “We would like to thank our students for taking part at the end of a busy week and for producing such exciting performances. Thank you to all the music staff who took part and supported the evening.”
