Sporting headlines from Headington Prep

Friday 26 February - IAPS Swimming (results just in!)

Headington swimmers entered an under 10 and under 11 team in this competition. With most of the events having an entry of 200 or more the standard is extremely high. In the individual events the top 16 go through and in the relays only the top 12 so we were delighted that five of our swimmers have made it through to the National finals, taking 10th place in the 50m backcrawl and 14th place in the 50m freestyle. The medley relay team also qualified.

County Cricketers!

Congratulations to the two Headington girls who have been chosen for Oxfordshire's County Cricket Team! They will play Warwickshire and Berkshire later in the year.

Thursday 11 March - U10 & U11 Hockey v Manor

Headington played Manor for the first time this year, with our Under 11s A and B teams playing one Manor team. The A team won 5-2 and the B team lost 3-1. The Under 10s both had very exciting games with the ball going from end to end. The A team won 1-0 with a very well worked goal and some excellent defence at the back. The B team had a 0-0 draw, with both teams having scoring chances, however the Manor girls were kept out by excellent defending.

Monday 8 March - U11 Hockey v Oxford High

On Monday 8th March Headington fielded five teams with a combination of Under 10 and Under 11 girls playing Oxford High. Playing on grass meant that Headington had to adjust quickly to the different surface. This they did, scoring a total of twenty six goals to win eleven games, draw one and lose three. Well done to all those who played.

Saturday 6th March - Cross Country Championships

The morning was cold, slightly damp but promising sunshine… perfect cross country weather. Headington Prep fielded 4 teams in the county championships - and two teams returned as county champions!

  • Under 8’s came 4th with our first girl home in 13th place. The last runner came 37th in a class of 50 runners.
  • Under 9’s came 3rd in the county with one of our Under 8 girls running for U9’s coming home in 6th place as 1st Headington girl back, a fantastic achievement!
  • Under 10 team came 1st in the county, with our first runner home in 4th place, our second in 9th and our third, 15th.
  • Under 11’s came 1st, with one Headington runner taking the county championships trophy in 1st place, backed up by another in 7th and our third placed runner in 14th.

Thursday 4th March - IAPS Netball

The team played some of their best netball and gave 100% effort throughout the day. We played in a difficult section and met some very experienced teams, several of whom qualified to go on to the national finals. We created opportunities to score in every game and defended particularly well against some talented and aggressive players. Well done to all who were there for their hard work, spirited play and focus. Headington recorded wins against Coworth Flexlands and Devonshire House.

Monday 1st March: Under 10 and Under 11 Hockey v Chandlings

Headington Under 11B hockey team played a well rehearsed Chandlings. Initially Chandlings had more of the play and they managed to score two early goals. Headington then applied pressure with several shots on target which were saved by the Chandlings goalkeeper. The final score was 3-0.

Headington Under 10s battled well against a strong Chandlings side. At first Headington struggled playing on grass and were under continued pressure with some good saves from Headington's defence. Both teams came back strongly in the second half and although not managing to score made the Chandlings defence work hard. The final score for the A team was 4-0 and the B team was 6-0.

Monday 1st March - Under 9 and Under 11 Netball v Chandlings

Under 9s played their first match this week against Chandlings, who have been playing competitively since September. They played really well showing calm passing under pressure and moving well into spaces. Both teams enjoyed their games and will have learnt much during the match. They all thought the apple juice, doughnuts and bananas were a good idea for an after match refreshment! Final scores: A Team lost 2-4; B Team lost 0-1.

The under 11s played this fixture as a preparation for the IAPS tournament. They played their best netball ever and used their time to try out set pieces and try to analyse the play of the opposition which we knew would be well rehearsed. With close marking, they managed to break through Chandlings' defences on several occasions to gain possession and go on the offensive. Well done to the girls, who won 9-3.

Thursday 25th Feb - Under 10 and Under 11 hockey v Rye

This was the first match of the year for the under 10 hockey team, and they started confidently, putting immediate pressure on the Rye defence. Moving the ball away from defence in the circle led to two well struck goals for Headington, and good support play and defence helped to keep the ball in the attacking end, so that Headinton ended the match with a clean sheet.

The under 11s started very strongly with three goals within the first three minutes. Our goal keeper did a super job, stopping many shots - particularly impressive as this was her first match! The final score was 5:0 to Headington, testimony to some excellent play in both attack and defence.

Well done to all those who played.
