One of the fastest growing and most successful clubs at Headington. Our AFA qualified coach, Mrs Douglas, accompanies our fencers to a wide range of competitions including the Public Schools Fencing Championships in the Spring. Girls will have the opportunity to take Amateur Fencing Association awards and participate in competitions if appropriate.
Recent achievementsHeadington fencers spent a week battling in the British Youth Championships, where two girls qualified in all three categories! Our keen fencers were ready to take on the competition at the National Institute of Sport in Sheffield. The girls performed very well, and three gained 16th, 17th and 23rd place in the National rankings. Competitions in both Foil and Epee were underway during the week, where our girls proved to be causing trouble for the more experienced club fencers.
“I have fenced at Headington since I was in U3 and have enjoyed every session. The size of the club grows every year and so does our success. The emphasis is very much on setting yourself goals to achieve rather than winning and this I think has helped me greatly with my confidence not only in sport but in other areas of life. The sessions often feature footwork, aerobic exercises to increase fitness, class exercises in particular weapons and time to fence each other and practice what we have learnt. It is also a way to make friends with people you would not normally talk to because we are encouraged to fence everyone in the group no matter the age. Our coach is lively and encouraging and the atmosphere is more as a group of friends than as a strict lesson format.”
