At any time, around 220 pupils (from U4 and above) are actively involved in this scheme, which asks of its candidates a high degree of commitment, perseverance and enthusiasm.
The award is a challenging programme of activities designed to help participants learn new skills, help others and experience adventure. There are three levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, each with four sections – Service, Skill, Physical Recreation and Expeditions, while at Gold level there is an additional Residential Project. All require sustained effort over a period of time – no quick fix solutions here - with at least six months required for the Bronze level, 12 months for Silver and 18 months for Gold. Silver and Gold medal participants have organised joint expeditions with other local girls' schools in the past, consolidating relationships and sharing expertise and resources.
Those that succeed in gaining awards find a huge sense of personal achievement, as well has having increased confidence, a better ability to lead and work as part of a team and a greater understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses. As a bonus, organisations such as universities and employers take a good view of the Award and what it says about the award holder.
